How Many Fittings Do You Need for a Perfect Custom Suit?

The fitting is where a custom suit becomes custom. Measurements get you close. The fitting gets you perfect.

But how many fittings do you actually need? One? Two? Three? The answer depends on what you're ordering, how complex it is, and how much time you have.

This guide explains what happens at each fitting stage, when one is enough, and when you should push for more.

Why Fittings Matter

A tape measure captures numbers. A fitting captures reality.

Your body isn't a set of static dimensions. It moves. It has quirks — one shoulder slightly lower, one arm slightly longer, a posture that tilts forward or back. You sit differently than you stand. You reach for things. You button and unbutton your jacket.

No measurement can anticipate all of this. Only a fitting — where the tailor sees the garment on your actual body — reveals how the suit truly fits.

What a Fitting Reveals

  • How the chest drapes when you move your arms
  • Whether shoulders sit correctly or pull/bunch
  • How the collar lies against your neck
  • Where the waist suppression should hit
  • How trousers break over your shoes
  • Whether you can sit comfortably without the jacket pulling

These details are invisible on a measuring tape. They're obvious in a fitting.

The Quick Answer

Situation Fittings Needed
Standard suit, experienced tailor 1 fitting
First suit with a new tailor 1-2 fittings
Complex garments (3-piece, overcoat) 2 fittings
Unusual body proportions 2-3 fittings
Full bespoke, Savile Row style 3+ fittings
Rush order (24-48 hours) 0-1 fitting
Remote order (not present) 0 fittings (adjustments after delivery)

Most visitors to Bangkok getting a standard two-piece suit need one fitting. That's enough for an experienced tailor to achieve an excellent fit.

What Happens at Each Fitting Stage

Understanding what happens at each stage helps you know what to expect — and what to ask for.

First Fitting: The Baste Fitting

The first fitting typically happens 2-3 days after measurements. The garment is partially constructed — basted together with loose stitches that can be easily adjusted.

What's being checked:

  • Overall silhouette: Does the jacket shape follow your body correctly?
  • Shoulder placement: Do the seams sit at your shoulder point?
  • Chest fit: Enough room to move? Too loose? Pulling anywhere?
  • Jacket length: Does it cover your seat appropriately?
  • Sleeve length: Showing the right amount of shirt cuff?
  • Collar roll: Lying flat against your neck without gaps?
  • Trouser fit: Waist, seat, thigh, and break length

What you should do:

  • Wear a dress shirt (or the shirt you'll wear with the suit)
  • Bring the shoes you'll wear (heel height affects trouser length)
  • Move naturally — sit down, raise your arms, button the jacket
  • Speak up about anything that feels wrong

What the tailor does:

  • Marks adjustments with chalk or pins
  • Takes notes on specific changes
  • May re-measure certain areas
  • Explains what will be adjusted

Second Fitting: The Forward Fitting

If a second fitting is included, it happens after adjustments from the first fitting are made. The garment is now closer to final form.

What's being checked:

  • Did the first adjustments work? Are previous issues resolved?
  • Fine-tuning: Subtle refinements to silhouette and drape
  • Balance: Does the jacket hang evenly front-to-back?
  • Movement: Can you move comfortably in all directions?
  • Details: Pocket placement, button positioning, lapel roll

When a second fitting matters:

  • The first fitting revealed significant adjustments
  • You have unusual proportions the tailor is still learning
  • The garment is complex (three-piece suit, overcoat)
  • You're investing in premium construction and want perfection

Third+ Fittings: True Bespoke

Multiple fittings (three or more) are traditional in Savile Row bespoke tailoring. Each fitting refines the fit incrementally.

Typical stages:

  1. Skeleton baste: Just the shell, no sleeves or collar
  2. Baste fitting: Full garment, loosely constructed
  3. Forward fitting: After major adjustments
  4. Finished fitting: Final garment, minor tweaks only

When this level is appropriate:

  • Full canvas, hand-tailored construction
  • Clients who demand absolute perfection
  • Unusual body shapes requiring extensive pattern work
  • Heirloom-quality garments meant to last decades

Most Bangkok tailors work in the 1-2 fitting range. Three+ fittings are available but typically reserved for premium orders with extended timelines.

When One Fitting Is Enough

For most standard orders, a single fitting delivers excellent results. Here's why:

Experienced Tailors Read Bodies

A tailor who's measured thousands of clients develops intuition. They anticipate how your measurements will translate to fit. They see patterns and make adjustments before problems occur.

Modern Construction Allows Precision

Today's tailoring techniques — combined with precise measurement systems — produce accurate first cuts. The fitting confirms and fine-tunes rather than corrects major issues.

Bangkok Tailoring Is Efficient

Bangkok's tailoring tradition emphasizes efficiency without sacrificing quality. Skilled craftsmen work quickly and accurately, reducing the need for multiple corrections.

One Fitting Works Well When:

  • You're ordering a standard suit style
  • Your body proportions are relatively typical
  • You're working with an experienced tailor
  • You can communicate clearly about preferences
  • You have realistic expectations

When You Need More Fittings

Sometimes one fitting isn't enough. Be prepared to ask for additional fittings if:

You Have Unusual Proportions

  • Very tall or very short
  • Significant difference between chest and waist
  • One shoulder noticeably lower than the other
  • Pronounced forward or backward posture
  • Athletic build with large shoulders and small waist

The First Fitting Reveals Problems

If the first fitting shows significant issues — not minor tweaks but real problems — request a second fitting to confirm corrections worked.

You're Ordering Complex Garments

  • Three-piece suits (waistcoat adds another layer of fitting)
  • Overcoats and topcoats
  • Double-breasted jackets (balance is trickier)
  • Morning dress or formal wear

This Is Your First Suit with This Tailor

Even experienced tailors need to learn your body. A second fitting helps them dial in your preferences and proportions for future orders.

You're Paying Premium Prices

If you're investing in top-tier construction and premium fabrics, the garment deserves the attention multiple fittings provide.

What to Check During Your Fitting

Don't just stand there and nod. A fitting is your opportunity to ensure the suit is right.

The Jacket

Shoulders:
- Do the seams sit at your shoulder point (not hanging off or pulling in)?
- Is there any bunching or divots?

Chest:
- Can you comfortably button the jacket?
- Is there pulling at the button when fastened?
- Can you move your arms forward without restriction?

Back:
- Is the fabric smooth or showing stress lines?
- Any pulling below the collar?

Collar:
- Does it sit flat against your shirt collar?
- Any gaps at the back of the neck?

Length:
- Does the jacket cover your seat?
- Can you cup the hem with your fingers (traditional guide)?

Sleeves:
- Showing 1-2cm of shirt cuff?
- Both sleeves the same length (or appropriately different if your arms differ)?

The Trousers

Waist:
- Sitting at your natural waist (or where you prefer)?
- Comfortable without a belt?

Seat:
- Enough room to sit comfortably?
- Not baggy or pulling?

Thighs:
- Room to move without excess fabric?

Break:
- How much fabric pools at your shoes?
- No break (modern), slight break (classic), or full break (traditional)?

Length:
- Even all the way around?
- Appropriate for your shoe style?

Questions to Ask at Your Fitting

Before adjustments are made:

  1. "What changes are you seeing?"
  2. "Is this fit typical for my body type?"
  3. "Are there any concerns you want to mention?"

About specific issues:

  1. "I feel tightness here — is that adjustable?"
  2. "This area seems loose — should it be taken in?"
  3. "The sleeve feels long/short — what do you think?"

About the process:

  1. "Will I see the garment again before completion?"
  2. "What happens if adjustments are needed after I receive it?"
  3. "How long until the final garment is ready?"

Rush Orders and Fittings

When time is tight (24-48 hours), fittings may be compressed or skipped:

What typically happens:

  • Measurements are taken with extra care
  • Experienced tailors rely on expertise to anticipate fit
  • A quick try-on may happen before final construction
  • Minor adjustments made on the spot at pickup

Trade-offs:

  • Less opportunity to catch issues before completion
  • Simpler designs work better (fewer things to go wrong)
  • Experienced tailors deliver good results; less experienced may struggle

Our recommendation:

If possible, allow at least one fitting. Even 48 hours provides time for a fitting if you schedule efficiently.

Remote Orders Without Fittings

If you're ordering from overseas and can't be present for fittings:

How Tailors Compensate

  • Detailed measurement guides for self-measurement
  • Measurements from existing garments you send in
  • Photos of you in fitted clothing for visual reference
  • Communication about your preferences and concerns

After Delivery

Good tailors include adjustment policies:

  • Minor alterations covered for 30 days
  • Guidance on what a local tailor can fix
  • Remake policies for significant issues

Tips for Remote Orders

  1. Measure carefully, measure twice
  2. Send measurements from a well-fitting existing suit
  3. Provide photos in fitted clothing
  4. Communicate clearly about fit preferences
  5. Ask about the adjustment policy before ordering
